SEA ARCHITECTURES

Abstract

The coastal areas, as urban settlements located in land-sea transition ecosystems, and fundamentally supported by diverse natural resources, have previously been exploited in an integrated way. However, the current urban occupation has not been compatible with the natural resources suitability to respond to the new exploitation processes.
Based on a landscape concept, the Sea Architectures are the result of a cultural recognition of the coastal areas’ communities, related to their ecological condition, although in an artificialized manner.
In this sense, the research carried out at the Lisbon School of Architecture (FA-ULisboa) between 2011 and 2014, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), aimed to develop an alternative methodology for interpreting the coastal areas, namely located in Arrábida and Algarve. Its team was composed by integrated and transdisciplinary researchers of five different research centers, with wide experience on architectonic surveys, structure analysis, the study of building materials and construction techniques, as well as ecological characterization, bibliographical research, and interpretation of collective occupation systems.
The final results of this methodology are intended to be published in a Practice Handbook, as a step-by-step guide for an integrated interpretation of the coastal areas, inserted in a new research project entitled “Sea Architectures (Roots of Counter-culture)” and other PhD research theses.

Development and/or results

During the investigation were held the international seminars “Cidades Visiveis e Invisiveis – Visões de Mudança”, “O (Re)verso da Paisagem – Filosofias da Pobreza e da Riqueza”  e “Para uma Ética do Território” for discussion of "Sea Architectures". The results were published in two books "RP" and "PET". The working options were considered and defined as communications in external events. It was also created the curricular units "Coastal Areas Rehabilitation" and "Urban and Architectural Rehabilitation", as well as the research group "Sustenta - Laboratory for Sustainable Design".
